Installation and Setup
Where can I download the Learning Edition?
Use the Microsoft badge on the Downloads page to open the official Microsoft listing.
Does the application work offline?
The desktop application supports local-first operation after installation. Internet may be needed for Store installation, updates and online support.
What should I check before a learning session?
Confirm the Windows user, activity, timer, voice, WordBank and any Advanced Filter.
What should I check before a competition?
Verify participant order, approved WordBank, rules, audio input, extended displays, privacy settings, storage and report folder.
Where can I find the User Guide?
Open the User Guides page or the application Help menu where available.
Learner Sessions and Accounts
Does entering a name create a permanent learner profile?
No. The name identifies the session and leaderboard entry; it does not create a separate private database.
How are learner statistics separated?
Statistics belong to the signed-in Windows user database. Use separate Windows accounts for separate private learner records.
Why do different names show the same statistics?
Names entered under the same Windows account contribute to that account database.
Does Spelling Level choose harder words?
No. WordBank and filter selection determine the actual words and practical difficulty.
Can Spelling Level be left blank?
Yes. Learning continues normally; the field is used for leaderboard grouping.
Learning Modes
What is the recommended learning sequence?
Learn → Practice → Test → Individual Speed Round.
What is Learn Mode?
Learn Mode presents spelling, pronunciation, definition, sentence, part of speech and origin before assessment.
What is Practice Mode?
A guided unscrambling activity that reinforces letter order and records PRACTISED status.
What is Test Mode?
An independent assessment that hides the approved spelling and records CORRECT or INCORRECT.
What is Individual Speed Round?
A timed learning activity using one countdown for successive words.
When should Speed Round be used?
Use it after accuracy is established; compare correct words as well as attempted words.
What do Flashcards do?
Flashcards support structured review and retention using word information.
Can a human pronouncer be used?
Yes. Select Silent - Manual when Text-to-Speech is not required.
WordBanks and Word Management
What is a WordBank?
A named collection of complete word records used for learning or competition.
Does the software include starter words?
Yes, more than 10,000 starter words are included to help users begin.
Are starter words an official competition list?
No. Organisers must validate and approve the exact competition list.
Can I import a spreadsheet?
Yes. Use the supplied structure and review spelling, meaning, sentence, pronunciation, origin and part of speech.
Why do some WordBanks use UK or US prefixes?
The prefix identifies the main spelling convention used in that collection.
Can unneeded WordBanks be deleted?
Yes. Delete unneeded collections carefully to reduce selection errors.
How should competition definitions be reviewed?
Remove wording that reveals the target word or an obvious variant.
What does Reset Database remove?
It removes learning progress and statistics and can remove Competition Edition records. Retain required reports first.
Spelling Rules and Advanced Filter
What is a spelling rule?
A recurring pattern that helps explain or predict spelling; rules still have exceptions.
What is the 1-1-1 doubling rule?
A one-syllable word ending in one vowel plus one consonant commonly doubles before a vowel suffix.
When is final e dropped?
Silent final e is commonly dropped before a suffix beginning with a vowel.
When does y change to i?
Consonant + y commonly changes to i before a suffix, except before an i suffix.
What does Advanced Filter do?
It creates a dynamic study set using length, structure, WordBank, origin, part of speech and status.
Can I filter INCORRECT words only?
Yes. Set Status = INCORRECT and combine other conditions if required.
Can filters use word-length comparisons?
Yes: equal to, greater than, greater than or equal to, less than, or less than or equal to.
What is a filter recipe?
A reusable combination of conditions designed for a rule, level or weakness.
Progress and Reports
What statuses are tracked?
UNATTEMPTED, LEARNT, PRACTISED, CORRECT and INCORRECT.
What is the difference between LEARNT and PRACTISED?
LEARNT comes from Learn Mode; PRACTISED comes from guided Practice Mode.
What produces CORRECT or INCORRECT status?
An independent Test Mode attempt.
How are leaderboard positions calculated?
Highest correct-word total first, then highest percentage where totals are equal.
What does a session report contain?
Results, timing and the actual spellings entered during the session.
How should INCORRECT words be used?
Create a focused recovery session using Advanced Filter.
Competition Operation
How many participants can be imported?
Up to 999 participants using the supplied spreadsheet workflow.
How is participant order controlled?
The sequence assigned during registration is used automatically throughout the event.
What happens if every active speller fails in one round?
Affected spellers are reinstated and continue in the original sequence.
Is disqualification the same as elimination?
No. Disqualification is an exceptional official action requiring a factual reason.
What is Challenge Elimination?
An end-of-round function that restores an eligible participant eliminated during the round that just ended.
Does restoration change the participant sequence?
No. The restored participant returns within the original order.
What does +30 do?
It adds authorised extra time when competition rules allow.
How is the next round started?
Review the end-of-round state, resolve eligible challenges and use the round-advance control.
Three-Screen Technical Setup
Can the event run with one screen?
Yes. Use the computer for compact adjudication or rehearsal.
What does a two-screen setup provide?
Adjudicator control plus either a dedicated Speller or Audience display.
What does the full three-screen setup provide?
Separate Adjudicator, Speller and Audience views.
Why must Windows use Extend?
Extend creates independent desktops; Duplicate mirrors one image.
Can an HDMI splitter create independent screens?
Normally no. A splitter duplicates one signal.
What docking station is required?
A powered dock explicitly supporting the required independent display count and resolutions.
Does any USB-C port support displays?
No. Confirm that the host port carries the video technology required by the dock.
When is an HDMI extender needed?
Use an active, optical or HDMI-over-Cat solution for venue distances beyond reliable passive cable limits.
Audio, Privacy and Support
Does manual word delivery disable recording?
No. Competition audio can be recorded with Text-to-Speech or a human pronouncer.
How do I confirm the microphone is ready?
Select the intended Windows input, confirm Microphone Ready and verify meter movement.
Why might the volume meter not move?
Check mute, gain and the selected Windows input device.
How is Competition Speed Round audio stored?
The complete round is stored as one audio file.
Can participant details be hidden?
Yes. Show only authorised information and use approved event content when necessary.
Can reports be viewed without Microsoft Word?
Yes. The application includes an on-screen report viewer.
Where are the formal privacy statements?
Use the separate Learning and Competition Privacy pages in the Resources menu.
